What the Numbers Mean
Bat Length
Pretty straightforward, it’s the measurement in inches from the knob at the bottom of the handle to the end of the barrel. Longer bats give more reach. They also swing heavier and slower. For most kids between 8 and 12, you’re looking at somewhere between 27 and 31 inches.
Drop Weight
This is the number you see printed as -10 or -11 or -12 on the side of the bat. It’s the difference between the length in inches and the weight in ounces.
If a bat is 29 inches long and weighs 19 ounces, the drop is -10. A bat that’s 28 inches and weighs 17 ounces is a -11.
The bigger the number, the lighter the bat. A -12 is lighter than a -10 at the same length.
Lighter bats are easier to control, especially for younger or smaller players. As kids get older and stronger, they move toward lower drop numbers because they can handle more weight.

You get this by subtracting the drop from the length:

The Arm-Extension Test
Have your child grip the bat handle and hold it straight out to the side at shoulder height, arm fully extended, bat parallel to the ground.
If they hold it steady for 20 to 30 seconds without the arm dropping, the weight works. If the arm drops right away, the bat is too heavy. This is the most reliable test there is, and it takes about 30 seconds at the store.
The Comfort Test
This one doesn’t get talked about enough. When your child holds the bat, the grip should feel natural, not like they’re white-knuckling it. Honestly, about 90% of kids grip the bat way too tight, and a bat that feels heavy usually makes that worse. A loose, relaxed grip produces a better follow-through. USA Baseball vs USSSA vs BBCOR

USA Baseball
